CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STEM

  1. The stem is the ascending portion of the plumule.
  2. It is positively phototrophic.
  3. It has terminal bud which causes elongation of the stem.
  4. The stem is divided into nodes and internodes.
  5. When young, the stem is soft and green and therefore contributes towards photosynthesis.
  6. Stem bears leaves at the nodes.
  7. Stem may be branched or unbranched.
  8. Hairs when present are multicellular.
  9. A mature stem or its branches bear flowers.
  10. Stems often undergo modification to perform various other functions such as support, defence, assimilation etc.
